A Message from Marilyn Gentry,
President of the WCRF global network
We believe the end of cancer begins with research and education. Science shows that about a third of cancer cases can be prevented through healthy diet and lifestyle choices and as President of the global network I believe this lifesaving message is worth sharing.
The World Health Organization recently predicted cancer would become the number one worldwide cause of death in 2010, which makes it more important than ever that people are aware they can do something to reduce their risk.
This means we face a big challenge in the coming years, but one of the benefits of being part of a global network is that we can join forces around the world to have the greatest impact.
Our network has become world-renowned for its work in funding cutting edge scientific research, spreading the cancer prevention message to millions of people and interpreting the available research data relating to diet, nutrition and cancer. We have published three global expert reports:
- “Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective” published in 1997
- “Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective” published in 2007; and
- “Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention”, published in 2009.
The range and scope of the WCRF global network’s activities and the variety of people we help is amazing and would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, supporters and researchers.
But there is still much more to do. This is why we are committed to continuing to fund scientific research into the links between lifestyle and cancer and giving people the information they need to make informed choices as we strive towards a future free from cancer.
Marilyn Gentry
