Project title
Adherence to the WCRF/AICR Cancer Prevention Recommendations and Cancer Risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) (2009/44)
Scientific abstract
In 2007, World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) published the Second Expert Report which made ten Recommendations on diet, physical activity and weight management for cancer prevention based on the most comprehensive collection of available evidence.
Dr Norat’s study will measure the impact on cancer risk following recommendations for preventing the disease. This will be done by examining the lifestyle of 521,468 people aged 35 to 74 years, all participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, a multicentre study from 10 European countries. A score will be given to each participant for how closely they follow WCRF’s Recommendations for Cancer Prevention. The study will then examine how many people developed cancer and to what extent following the recommendations reduces people’s risk of both developing the disease and dying from it.
The findings of this study will enable us to estimate the proportion of cancers that could be prevented depending on the extent to which people move towards following the recommendations and they will also give us a better idea of how the recommendations work as a whole.
