Professor Serge HERCBERG, MD PhD
Director of the Department of Nutritional Epidemiology, Professor of Nutrition
National Institute for Health and Medical Research
Medical University of Paris
Bobigny, France
Professor Hercberg is currently Director of the Centre de Recherche en Nutrition Humaine (CRNH - National Institute for Health and Medical Research), and Professor of Nutrition at the Medical University of Paris. He has been a member of the Comité d’Experts Spécialisés en Nutrition Humaine (AFSSA) since 2000, and of the Conseil National de l’Alimentation (CNA) since 2001. In 1997, he was awarded a research prize from the French Institute of Nutrition, and in 2007, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Gembloux University in Belgium. He has published more than 300 international scientific publications, and several books dedicated to Nutrition and Public Health.
He is involved in epidemiological research (observational and interventional) studies, which aim to assess the nutritional status of the general population and at risk groups. This involves recognising and assessing the impact of the multiple determinants involved, and understanding the relationship between nutrition (nutrients, food groups, dietary patterns and physical activity) and health; and in particular, identifying and evaluating the role of risk factors and protective factors associated with nutrition, which may play a role in the onset of chronic diseases. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand knowledge in the field of nutrition and public health.
