Political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, focusing on the draft action plan (2022-2030) to effectively implement the global alcohol strategy as a public health priority.

Delivered January 2022.

Driving action to prevent cancer and other non-communicable diseases is a policy framework for promoting healthy diets, physical activity and breastfeeding, and reducing alcohol consumption. The policy framework can be used to consider policy actions that will help make environments conducive for people and communities to follow our Cancer Prevention Recommendations.

Our comments on proposals in the Irish Public Health (Alcohol) Bill to require a cancer health warning on labels of alcohol products, a cancer health warning in advertisements of alcohol products, and restrictions to broadcast advertisements for alcohol products, as alcohol is a known carcinogen. Our comment outlines evidence on the links between alcohol and cancer, supporting the Bill’s proposals.
