Dr Anne Lee

Dr Anne LeeDr Anne Lee is the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society. She is Chief of Service of the Clinical Oncology Centre at the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, where she has contributed as the former Deputy Hospital Chief Executive. She is also the former Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation Professor in Holistic Cancer Care and Head of the Department of Clinical Oncology at the University of Hong Kong.

Dr Lee entered the field of oncology in 1977 in Hong Kong, under the pioneering Prof John Ho. With him as her mentor she became heavily involved with the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society to advance cancer control efforts in addition to her regular work as a clinical oncologist. Dr Lee has also served on the Board of Director of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) for 6 years and she is Coordinator of UICC TNM Global Advisory Group.

Her key achievements include setting up Clinical Oncology Departments both in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Besides clinical services, Dr Lee is heavily involved in management and leadership, particularly in fostering Hong Kong-Shenzhen cross-border health services. She is instrumental in developing hospital accreditation and specialist training of doctors to international level. She is Director of the Shenzhen Hospital Accreditation Research Center and Vice President of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Medical Specialist Training Centre.

Alongside this, Dr Lee has made great contributions to nasopharyngeal cancer research, being recognised as Highly Ranked Scholar – Lifetime (Top 0.05% scholar) in the Specialty of Nasopharynx Cancer and Top 1% scholar worldwide by citation in 2024. Following the research initiated by Prof John Ho on the connection between salted fish in the southern Chinese diet and nasopharyngeal cancer, Chinese-style salted fish is now recognised by the WHO as a type 1 carcinogen. Subsequent public awareness campaign by the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society has been most successful. Together with the dedicated efforts by all scientists and cancer advocates from Hong Kong, the incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer has decreased by over 70% and the mortality has even decreased by over 80% during the last 40 years.
